Windows xp mouse not working startup

I did read that thread you mentioned while I was in the midst of this. I am about to go out of town for a few days, but will try doing the system diagnostics when I return.

As also mentioned, I fortunately have a Norton Ghost backup image on a second hard drive that it only about 3 weeks old, so I can try using that if nothing else seems to work. And if the hard drive is truly failing, well I can copy the backup drive image to that.

But in the meantime, I appreciate other ideas to see how to restore the USB input device functionality. Have run system diagnostics on the hard drive and USB controller, plus mouse response. No problems indicated. Able to use USB keyboard and mouse when using the diagnostics from the hard drive utility partition and prior to Windows boot.

Maybe it's a problem with the USB driver in Windows? Otherwise, on Tuesday night I plan to try the Windows CD and go to Install, and see if it recognizes a prior installation, so I can use the repair function which I now realize that I should have tried before the recovery console option. If that doesn't work, I may have to resort to restoring a disk image via Norton Ghost - an option that's not so appealing now that I have checked that my last backup was in July, rather than last month.

In case anyone is following this thread - I have resolved the issue by using the Norton Ghost program and my backup disk image. I tried it twice and it stalled after the reboot -to-hard drive function where, I presume, XP attempts to repair itself based on the settings from its initial installation.

The problem is still there though. When - was re-installing XP, the KB and trackpad were working for about 5 minutes, then suddenly during the installation they stopped. Fixed it! Recently I was needing to use a windows install cd to recover my Master Boot Record, but the only computer I have with a disk drive is an AMD-based Acer, so I put my hard drive in there and then fixed my MBR, Due to the fact that my netbook is Intel-based, this must have messed around with the hardware, making the BIOS unrecognisable to some of them.

So what should I do? Just did that, now it works. As Seen On. Welcome to Tech Support Guy! Latest posts S. Windows Freezes when idle Latest: SmoothMercy 16 minutes ago. Use a live Linux CD and see if the keyboard and mouse work. My guess is they will since the same keyboard was working while you were in the BIOS. What is this Dell's model and model number? Gosh I hope it's not that simple and I'm not that stupid.

I would imagine that the USB drivers or such are now toast because of the hard drive corruption that was obvious from the results of the repair by chkdsk. I guess I thought you'd tell me how to slipstream the USB into the running system.

We're waiting on a copy of the Dell Recovery CD Linux Live CD types. I work at a library, by the way, and I had to log in tot he check in program last night, but the keyboard would not function at all.

I tried some keys, and found that the escape key opened the windows start menu, and the scroll lock worked as the escape key weird. I did several things to get it to start working again such as restarting the computer, and changing the port to which the keyboard was plugged - neither of these had any effect.

So I went into control panel and into the keyboard menu, and there was a dialog box that said to type to test the cursor speed. I tried typing in this box and it worked. Dumbfounded, I was. I figure that the problem was solved by going into this keyboard dialog box, I don't know how it would magically have fixed itself. This time I scanned all progs loaded startup using "Quick Startup 2. It does have a sys tray icon where you can turn it off but it tends to hide. Using FilterKeys, you can also slow the rate at which a key repeats when you hold it down.

Open Accessibility Options. If the Use shortcut check box in the Settings for FilterKeys dialog box is selected, you can turn FilterKeys on or off by holding down the right SHIFT key for 8 to 16 seconds depending on the other settings you have selected in the Accessibility Options dialog box. I now lose the keyboard after a log off , and attempt to either fast user switch OR log back in to the original profile.

A full restart restores keyboard Thankyou I followed the instructions above for my mate and work it did- though heaven knows why a tick there should disable the darn thing in the frst place.

I had this problem recently on a customers machine and this fixed it. You will have to go into regedit to edit a registry key. Caution - take care when editing registry as serious problems can be caused by deleting data here - best to make a backup first before performing any changes. Now since the keyboard is not functioning you will have to type using the on-screen keyboard feature in XP with :. Then after a XP reboot all should be fine - device manager should now show the keyboard driver and this device is working properly, so no more error codes, and normal typing should be possible.

I will choose the driver to install. Tried what Leggy suggested, found an extra value attached to the kbdclass and deleted it I thought I had it, but then it still didn't work after a reboot. It gives me an error code 38 still Any other thoughts? Is there a driver file out there for keyboards that might fix this issue? I have the same problem, worked in bios and safe mode adminster but not user account, so i make a new user account and saved the data from old account doc and settings.

I saved mine to exteral hard drive. Then deleted the account and all data. I logged on to the new account and moved data back. Did all in safe mode. Restart and it logged right in to the new user the desktop background was missing and icon what misses placed, but the keyboard works. Hope this helps someone.
