Newsboy's Action against the American Millionaire. Wells v. Waldorf Astor, a claim for damages lor personal injuries by a newsboy, who sued through his father as next friend, against the millionaire and newspaper proprietor came on yesterday at Lambeth County Court.

The father also claimed damages for loss of the boy's ser- vices, and expenses for medical attendance. The boy's case was that on the 23rd July he toas on the pavement at the junction of Water-. The driver was in the act of whip- ping his horse with a great deal of flourish when the whip became twisted around the neck of the boy, and he was dragged several yards. The boy sustained a severely lacerated neck and other injuries. For the defence evidence was called to show that the driver of the cart wilfully aimed the blow at the boy in order to cause him to move out of the way.

Mr Astor, it was argued, could not be held responsible for this wilful act on the part of the driver. Judge Emden, however, held that the evidence showed conclusively that the driver was whip- ping his horse. The Judge was sure that had Mr Astor heard the evidence he would never have defended the action, but he was no. The desire to venerate the illustrious dead has again drawn to West- minster many thousands of the populace, who, as on the first day, have massed themselves around the Palace Yard awaiting the throwing open of the doors of Westminster Hall. The crowd, though for the most part at this hour of the working kind, has a large admixture of what may be termed the middle-class element. The silk hat and the faultless morning coat jostle the fustian, while youth and strength contend for a place with the aged, the halt.

Such is the universality of the homage paid to all that is mortal of William Ewart Gladstone. The watchers who had kept the solemn vigil through the night had separated ere the van- guard of the procession entered.

The only new fact to be noted is that whereas four tapers surrounded the remains on the first day two have been added, so that six points of soft mellow light now illumine the black catafalque, heightening the glow upon the brass cross which,placed at the head, is the first object conspicuously visible as one crosses the tmeshold of that ancient pile, which by Coronation festivities no less than by State trials is eternally associated with the history of our land.

The dull grey weather of the early hours of Thursday has given place to conditions much more congenial, and there is a prospect of sunshine. Thomas said the country regarded the death of Mr Glad- stone as a great national loss, and therefore they did not want to give the resolution any party complexion or to sound any party note. He acknowledged with gratitude the generous sympathy and ready advice and assis tance which he had always received from th- departed statesman, who was the man of the century, and whose name would be a name to redound for ages.

Mr Gladstone was a man of immense moral courage, always on the side of the weak, never an optimist, and was the greatest intellect of the century throughout the world. Burnie, J. Mr Gladstone's appeal, he said, was always to truth, justice, chivalry, compassion, mercy.

It was ever made upon the highest possible moral grounds. Mrs Howell Idris, representing the Welsh Women's Liberal Union, added a few words of warm appreciation and grateful acknowledgment of the life work of the deceased statesman. She trusted that they would hallow his memory, and that in the years to come it would inspire them with increased enthusiasm and zeal to uphold the principles which were so dear to his heart.

The motion was carried in silence, all standing. The Presbytery of Glamorgan and Monmouth, which meets under the auspices of the Calvinistic Methodist denomination, at its last meeting, held at Llanmartin, near Newport, passed the follow- ing resolution That, in view of the lamented death of Mr Gladstone, we place on record our gratitude to God for the high Christian principles which characterised all his public life and work, for the Divine comfort vouchsafed to him in his last long illness, and for the testimony he bore in life and work, in illness and in death, to the truth of the Christian faith and experience.

At the fortnightly meeting of the Swansea Board of Guardians, the chairman the Rev. Gomer Lewis , in proposing a vote of condolence, said it was fitting that a board of guardians should mark its sense of the great service Mr Gladstone had rendered to the people of the kingdom for no one had displayed a more earnest and kindly desire to make the path of the poor less hard. To Mr Gladstone more than to any other man was due the reform of the poor law and its more humane administration.

Owen and Mr John Lewis supported the motion, which was carried. President , seconded by Mr W. Samuel, and carried :—" That we the members of the Llanelly Liberal Club, in common with our fellow subjects in all parts of the British Empire, in the most reverent manner desire to place on record our deepest sense of the loss to humanity at large through the death of Mr Gladstone, a prince among men and the most illustrious and gifted statesman of all countries and of all ages.

His great and noble work for the true happiness and welfare of mankind, and for the spread of truth and freedom, together with his pure and saintly life, and his courage and fortitude in the face of death, command our sincerest admiration.

We feel that his brilliant career and its intensely pathetic close will be an inspiration to us and to coming generations, and will redound to the everlasting elevation of the character of men all the world over. We are requested to call attention to the special memorial service to be held at the Park Hall, Cardiff, from 11 till 12 o'clock on Saturday. Over the end of the catafalque on which rested the coffin of William Ewart Gladstone had been thrown the white satin banner dedicated to the memory of Arch- bishop Benson, and these words outlined in gold seemed to illumine the grey, bare walls of West- minster Hall, making a fitting commentary to the scene enacted beneath its vaulted roof. No floral decoration, no trappings of woe, no sable hatchment. Simply the banner.

But it was sublime in its very simplicity, and the dead hand of Gladstone has to-day traced another page in the history of the nation he loved so well.
